The Rocky Mountains are home to the the Continental Divide Trail, a 3,100-mile backpacking through hike stretching from the Canadian border to the Mexican border. Only 70% of the Continental Divide Trail is roadless, so far, as the trail is still under development, but almost the entire high rockies section is on trail at this point and it's amazing.

Other major areas for backpacking in the Rockies include the Wind Rivers and the Tetons in Wyoming, the Mount Zirkel Wilderness, Flat Tops Wilderness, and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park in Montana, the Sawtooths in Idaho, and the high Uintah Mountains in Utah.
